West Jesmond Primary's Year 5s travelled north-Europe without having to leave the classroom during our Around the World School Club taster sessions throughout May! The sessions hosted 10-15 children, who made Lithuanian flower crowns and Finnish landscapes with Eve.
We made Daisy Flower Crowns (Lule Margarita) with 15 children on 26 April 2025 at Shkolla Shqipe ILIRIA, at the Chipping Barnet Library in London! All children made beautiful crowns and learned different parts of the flower, e.g.
15 beautiful Rosa de Sant Jordi Roses nurtured at the Around the World Club taster by Benton Dene Primary's Year 5s and 6s. Children loved the Spanish tradition, and their roses are almost as beautiful as their vocabulary! The session was led by Eve, 2nd of April 2025.
20 children (Year 8) from Gosforth Junior High Academy got hands-on with German lantern traditions https://enacteuropa.com/?q=node/190 & Chinese calligraphy through the first Around the World Club free taster session.
On 25 March 2025, students studying Chinese at Newcastle University used ENACT to try out Chinese calligraphy and learn Chinese words in ilab:learn.
Professor Paul Seedhouse gave a talk on the ENACT web app and project at the 2026 AAAL conference in Denver, Colorado.
At an Around the World Club at West Pelton School on 9 January, children learnt Chinese words and learnt about Chinese New Year. They did this by doing calligraphy (painting Chinese characters) and by making red envelopes, traditionally given for new year! They personalised the red envelopes for their family and took the red envelopes and calligraphy rice paper home.

Newcastle BA students made crêpes and learnt French!
Nathalie Paris brought 3 groups of BA students to ilab:learn on 9 and 10 May. They cooked and flipped and ate crêpes and learnt French language and culture using Nathalie's materials on the ENACT app https://enacteuropa.com/?q=node/428
The ENACT Web App Prizes will be awarded to the people who upload the best cultural activities for language learning using the ENACT ‘CREATE’ author software during the period 15 January to 31 May 2024. We aim to increase the number of languages and cultures on the ENACT app by rewarding materials in languages and cultures which we do not already have.
Paul Seedhouse travelled to Thailand and New Zealand during November 2023 and gave a number of talks on the ENACT web app.
At the WORLDCALL Conference in Chiang Mai, Thailand (11 November), he gave 3 talks on various aspects of ENACT, including a workshop in which delegates made cultural materials to upload onto ENACT. He was helped by Newcastle graduate Dr Sumita Supakorn (pictured left) and current PhD student Pattaramas Jantasin. The photo shows Loy Krathong banana leaf boats made for the famous Thai festival.
At ENACT, we pride ourselves on creating exciting new ways to learn languages. In 2023, with support from the The Confucius Institute at Newcastle University, we have collated a package of Chinese cultural activities for you to try. You can learn the Chinese words for ‘banana’ and ‘orange’, whilst making Beijing Ice Candy, or the words for ‘fire’ and ‘forest’, whilst trying calligraphy. Not only will you learn new words and discover a new culture, you will have fun whilst doing it!
We are organising a workshop as part of the Festival of Languages again this year. Join us on 24 March 2023 to learn Chinese language and culture with ENACT. We will also celebrate the International Day of Multilingualism (25 March). A number of schools will visit Newcastle University and students will participate in in-person workshops at the ilab:learn. Dr Müge Satar gave a hybrid talk on 11 November 2022 on the implementation of the ENACT web app in virtual exchange as part of her research visit to Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) (https://www.pucrs.br/en/) in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
We are very happy to be part of the World Teachers' Day event organised by the British Council on 1 October 2022.
It was a brilliant organisation with many thought-provoking, motivating and inspiring talks.
The Barcelona team were very busy last year. From May until October they ran 5 workshops consisting of 4 sessions each. Most of the first meetings have been done face to face, even though the gatherings are still restricted to six people whereas most of the final sessions have been done online, due to the participants’ timetables (time off from work, etc). They completed the workshops in December.
Well done to Irene Calderer who wins GOLD PRIZE of £200 for her Punjabi Dance activity.
Matilda Atkinson wins a silver prize and NEST prize of £100 for her Traditional Roast Dinner activity, while Simin Ren wins a silver prize of £100 for her activity called Cooking a Chinese recipe - Eggplant Stir Fry.
